The next decision . . .
That being the case, the next decision
you need to make (once you've rid yourself of the TV hype and misleading
promises) is how to get excellent, affordable training well suited to
your learning style, resources and goals.
Well, let me see if I can shed some light there too.
Essentially you'll have to choose one of the following options: 1) buy a book on the subject,
2) take a seminar or class, 3)buy an online course and study on your computer, or
4) buy a home study course that combines
technology and manuals for a well rounded approach. So let's deal with each of these options
individually.
1) Buying a book on the subject allows you to get exposure to the industry of choice with minimal investment. Depending on your background, this may be enough or may just be an introduction from which you branch out into a course.
2) Taking a seminar or class can be very expensive and
statistics prove you'll probably only retain about 10% of what you hear.
You'll be dependent upon the quality of the individual instructor, which can
be great or poor depending on the person you choose. But there is usually
the ability to get a little "hands on" experience which some people find
useful and others find a complete waste of time. Annual fees are assessed
and business independence is restricted. Expect to have to pay extra for
promotional aids, books and tools and anything else offered, in addition to
travel, hotel and meal expenses.
3) An online course, depending on the one you choose, can be good - even
very good, but if you don't handle long hours at a computer well, it's a really
tough way to get an education. You'll also be totally dependent on that
company remaining online and in business for the long term and you'll face
annual or monthly renewal fees you have to pay routinely to stay active and in
touch and keep what you've built over time - again all over the computer
increasing your eye strain.
4) Lastly, there is the combination approach. If you don't want to spend huge amounts of time at
a computer, you'd like to learn at home, this should be a winner. If you like the flexibility of having a multitude of manuals at
your
disposal (your own library, if you will) for their flexibility and your independence,
this should make you
smile. If you like having access to multiple training formats which give you a nice variety and
you prefer having
actual tools and visual aids included in the fee, this is a winner for you. And if you like never having to pay a renewal
fee to anyone for any reason (except for maybe a website - no getting around
that), this route is absolutely right for you.
While these are not all of the pluses or minuses to the various options
before you, hopefully you've gained a little better insight to the more
obvious
advantages and disadvantages of what you'll typically run across in your
search for what's best for you.
Oh by the way, any company advertising "guaranteed employment" typically
hires less than 1% of respondents, leaving the rest out in the cold feeling
under-trained, misled, abandoned and angry, so smart people don't even
bother considering that as a viable option for comparison. If something
seems too good to be true, it usually is.
Here's my honest advice to you . . .
Look carefully at your personal goals, your
study habits and preferences, the quality of an instructor, long term costs
as well as the short term costs, future preservation of what you've
purchased and developed, and then choose accordingly. To give you the best
of all worlds, I offer you the book or
combination approach to learning the business - but not just one
business or the other one - I teach you both businesses simultaneously for
